Aquarium of Crete: A journey to the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea

The Aquarium of Crete, a few kilometers outside Heraklion, is the largest of its kind in Greece and one of the most important aquariums in Europe. It operates as part of the Hellenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR) and is a space dedicated to the promotion and exploration of the Mediterranean marine world.

Its 62 tanks, with a total volume of 1,800,000 liters of seawater, house more than 1,200 marine organisms from approximately 150 different species, mainly from the Mediterranean but also from the tropics. The tour highlights the diversity of the underwater landscapes of Crete, bringing to light everything from large predators to delicate seahorses and jellyfish.

The experience is complemented by a unique virtual reality experience that allows you to "dive" to great depths, while the space features a souvenir shop and a restaurant with a magnificent view.
