Miramare Castle (Castello Miramare), built on the shore of the Gulf of Trieste in the 19th century, is the jewel of the city and attracts thousands of tourists. The castle was the residence of Archduke Maximilian of Hapsburg surrounded by a 54-acre coastal garden, which housed various kinds of tropical birds, trees and plants.

In recent years Miramare operates as a museum, showcasing the rich chambers of Maximilian, the music room, the throne and other rooms of the castle, which retain their original 19th-century decoration.
