Ancient Marble Quarries – Marathi

Paros is undoubtedly famous for its marble, the Parian marble, also known as «lychnitis». The name is due to the fact that the marble was extracted from the galleries with the help of the light of oil lamps (“lychnoi” in Greek). The galleries are part of the underground quarries that are unique in the world.

The quarries of Paros are located in Marathi. They date back to the Early Cycladic period and their exploitation ceased in the 19th century. If you wish to visit them and admire the galleries and the inscriptions made by ancient artists you can use the two entrances that go through caves. In the vicinity there are surface quarries, where marble was also extracted.
