A real colourful oasis in the Venetian Lagoon, Burano island may be only a 7 km vaporetto trip from the St Mark’s Square, but you will think that you have arrived on a different land!

All the houses in Burano are painted in a variety of colours, making the whole island look like a painter’s palette. Its inhabitants don’t get to choose their house’s colours though! If they want to paint their house, they must send a formal request to the government, which responds by making a note of the colours permitted for that specific lot of houses.

Burano is also famous for its lace work and its peaceful atmosphere, which makes it perfect for lovely strolls away from the crowds of St Mark’s Square.
